Update
Update the existing website to be mobile friendly while showcasing the course and club facilities in a more user friendly way.
We developed a website that utilised powerful imagery of the golf course while retaining a clean and simple design.
We improved on what came before, providing all users with the necessary information and CTAs to get in touch with the club.
Promote your course. A beautiful golf course crying out for promotion online.
What Was Missing From Their Website?
Tenterden Golf Club were looking to improve the functionality and usability of their website for their users and wanted a local agency. Their existing website was showing its age; an unresponsive site that rendered poorly on mobile devices. It lacked impactful imagery that showed the beauty of the golf course and academy facilities—facilities that were waiting to be promoted.
Show Off The Course And Provide Calls To Action
After reviewing the current website, we determined what elements should be carried over to the new site and what needed re-designing before building. We also agreed to conduct a number of photoshoots of the course and facilities for use on the website and social media.
We reiterated the importance of featuring contact points throughout the website leading visitors and potential members into communicating directly with the team at Tenterden Golf Club.
Where Was The Current Website Falling Short?
We studied the features and capabilities of other popular golf websites and discovered many visitors wanted a hole-by-hole preview of the course. We suggested developing a page that took the user through each hole on the course, featuring a series of photos showing the tees, fairways and greens. The client suggested featuring pro tips from their PGA professional on each hole for keen golfers to read. Often the client will be able to provide a unique perspective on their business that we will never see.
Tenterden Golf Club had a reputation of only being available to members but this didn’t reflect reality. Their website needed a more welcoming attitude towards anyone who was looking to play a round of golf. This led to the proposition of a news and events section that would feature throughout the website, keeping the user up-to-date and highlighting what events, news, or offers were currently available at the club.
Promotional shots. We conducted a number of photoshoots to capture the course, the club, and its facilities.
Allowing The Beauty Of The Course To Sell The Golfing Experience
The design of the website remained simple; choosing instead to highlight the beauty of the course with multiple images as well as listing the facilities of the academy and clubhouse. A colour palette was extracted from the existing brand identity and refined for the digital world. This colour scheme would be used throughout the website and utilised in print media conveying a sense of professionalism and restraint.
Immediately on the landing section of the homepage, the user would be shown the day’s course status and the latest weather report. This would lend itself to users revisiting the website to get the latest course conditions before visiting the club.
Looks like rain. An entire icon library of weather types was created for the weather reports featured on the website. We also designed icons for weather aspects that mattered to golfers, namely UV factor and visibility levels. Slight breeze. Wind strength and direction was an important aspect to feature for regular visitors. A detailed design. The prototype featured designs for every page on the website, ensuring our prototypes accurately reflected the final build.
Written Approval Received; The Website Build Commences
The website build came in two parts, first creating a static website for an initial launch. The second part involved adding the CMS to enable the golf club to take ownership and control over the site and its content.
The website was thoroughly tested across a range of devices, ensuring that the users would always get the best experience of the new responsive site, no matter what device.
The CMS was implemented and added to the site, replacing the initially static content with content dynamically driven from a database. The golf club were then able to test this on a BETA before the second iteration of the website, now with CMS, could be launched.
What’s on? A consistent design was created for social media posts when promoting new events and offers at the club.
Building A Focused CMS
The final website features a restricted CMS for the client to use, this was in contrast to the previous website which had given the client full access. Issues with the previous website became apparent when information was placed in seemingly random locations, hidden beneath multiple page links. The new website focused on the fundamental information, as well as numerous contact points if a user was keen on learning more.
The limited capabilities of the CMS allowed the client to populate the site with their content while ensuring the website’s functionality would not be impacted, removing navigational issues experienced with the previous site.
Update: Since the launch of the site, we integrated a small news and events CMS system that met the client’s needs.
